The consumption of renewable energy, as a key pillar of achieving sustainable development, reducing environmental risks, and enhancing the resilience of the national energy system against climate and infrastructure crises, has gained increasing significance. In Iran, given the intensification of electricity blackouts, severe air pollution, and growing pressure on energy networks, the need for comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the factors influencing renewable energy consumption is felt more than ever. This study, using long-term World Bank data and seven advanced time series similarity-matching methods, identifies and ranks the key variables co-behaving with renewable and fossil energy consumption in Iran. The findings reveal that renewable energy consumption is not solely dependent on environmental indicators but is directly influenced by a set of educational, gender-related, economic, institutional, and infrastructural variables. In contrast, fossil energy consumption is tied to factors such as subsidy-based support structures, weaknesses in infrastructure modernization, and the intensive exploitation of natural resources. By offering a multidimensional picture of the influencing variables, this research can serve as an effective guide for policymakers in designing reform packages, allocating targeted resources, and formulating national energy strategies.
