Abstract:   (49 Views)
Along the expansion and development of the digital economy, analyzing its effects on environmental pollution is of great importance for achieving sustainable development. Given the issue's importance, the present study has investigated the nonlinear impact of the digital economy on environmental pollution in Iran from 1990 to 2022 using a threshold regression approach. The findings indicated that the digital economy's threshold value is 29%. In both high and low regimes, the digital economy has a significant and negative impact on environmental pollution. The difference is that after surpassing the threshold level, the reduction effect of the digital economy on environmental pollution is diminishing. In the low regime, the digital economy can contribute to energy consumption reduction and carbon emissions through digital financing and increase carbon efficiency by improving economic growth, optimizing industrial structure, and promoting technological innovation. In the high regime of the digital economy, on the one hand, technologies such as blockchain, cloud computing, and advanced artificial intelligence entail high energy consumption, and on the other hand, the expansion of the digital economy requires the development of physical infrastructure such as submarine cables, communication masts, and data centers, which results in significant creation of electronic waste and environmental destruction.
