Despite having a significant share of the world's natural gas reserves, Iran faces a mismatch between the supply and demand of natural gas throughout the year, especially during the cold seasons. This issue has created numerous challenges for supplying fuel to the country's industries, particularly the power generation sector. Given the high dependence of various sectors of the country's economy on natural gas, this situation poses a threat to the country's energy security, beyond just economic concerns.
In recent years, the power generation sector has turned to using liquid fuels such as fuel oil and diesel to cope with this problem and ensure fuel supply for operational units. However, this shift, due to the lack of design of power plants based on these fuels and their associated pollution, has resulted in losses for both the power plants themselves and the country as a whole.
One potential solution to this problem is the importation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its storage, which can significantly contribute to the sustainable supply of fuel for the continuous operation of power plants. This study examines the importation of LNG as a replacement for the consumption of diesel and fuel oil in power generation over a 20-year period, focusing on technical and economic aspects.
The results of the study indicate that replacing LNG with diesel and fuel oil not only reduces carbon dioxide emissions and environmental damage but also leads to increased profitability and efficiency in this industry.
