Abstract: (17 Views)
Environmental problems are considered one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Although the focus on social sustainability has increased recently, the relationship between environmental aspects and social capital is still not well understood. The review of economic literature shows that the influence of social capital, institutional quality and political stability on the environment of MENA countries has not been studied. The present study examines the vital role of these factors, along with GDP per capita and renewable energy consumption in MENA countries from 2008 to 2023, on environmental sustainability using the Pooled Mean Group method. The results show that positive shocks in social capital, institutional quality and political stability have led to the improvement of environmental sustainability, and negative shocks have had a negative impact. The increase in the consumption of renewable energy and GDP per capita has also led to the improvement of environmental sustainability. This study shows that institutional quality, social capital and political stability are important and influential indicators of environmental quality in MENA countries, which should be considered by policy makers in these countries.
