Contribution of Factors Affecting Air Pollution by The Non-Metallic Mineral Products Industry: A Shapley-Owen Value Approach

The industrial sector is considered one of the most significant polluting sectors, encompassing several sub-sectors of production. The first step in controlling industrial pollution is to identify polluting industries, determine the factors influencing the air pollution they generate, and analyse the contribution of these factors to their pollution. In this article, we first calculated the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by each two-digit ISIC code industry during the period 2004-2021. Subsequently, each industry’s share of carbon dioxide emissions for each year was calculated. According to the calculations in this article, the ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’ industry accounted for an average of 26.02% of the total carbon dioxide emitted by the industrial sector, identifying it as the most polluting two-digit ISIC code industry. To determine the contribution of factors influencing the air pollution generated by the ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’ industry, we first identified these influential factors through regression analysis. Although the time period used in this study is limited and data prior to 2004 is unavailable, the bootstrap method based on residuals was employed to mitigate the impact of this limitation on the validity of the results. Following this, the Shapley-Owen value approach was utilized over the studied time frame. The Shapley value results indicate that energy carrier consumption has the largest share, approximately 57%, followed by physical capital intensity and capital expenditures, respectively. The Owen value results further reveal that among the energy carriers consumed in the ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’ industry, natural gas consumption has the highest share in carbon dioxide emissions, at approximately 30%, with electricity and fuel oil following with approximate shares of 11% and 8%, respectively.
